Indoor Rock Climbing’s Benefit for Kids:
There has been a lot of research, and a lot has been written, about the physical, emotional, and even spiritual benefits of indoor rock climbing. (Learn More Here) We know it may be the best full-body workout in existence. We know it builds the right kind of physical strength. We know indoor rock climbing is an excellent cardiovascular workout.
We know it can burn over 700 calories per hour. We know it can reduce the severity of depression. We know it increases the self-efficacy and self-perceptions of special needs kids. We know it can enhance brain and memory function, and certainly builds strategic planning capabilities.

Why do kids love rock climbing? It’s no surprise to parents that children love to climb. From their first steps, they progress almost overnight to scaling everything they can. Chill for the first few times, and really quite cute. But very quickly, parents have a new 24/7 job trying to provide some “guardrails” to the activity. Making sure they don’t climb too high and take risks that are too great.
Why do they climb? For kids, it’s simple…it’s fun! And that’s all that matters to them. They aren’t going to intellectualize or analyze it; they are just going to do it and have a ball doing it.
Turns out the reasons it’s fun for kids are quite comforting for their parents. First, it’s a normal development process resulting from a completely natural instinct to explore, and to begin to feel empowered in the world. Humans love challenges, and solving them, and every climb represents a highly personal challenge. (more…)

Sleep is important to everyone, but especially for kids. It’s when their bodies create the proteins that allow them to fight germs and allow them to grow. A child who is well rested will have better attention and store more memories than a child who isn’t. They are also more likely to be more creative with their problem solving. How much sleep does you child need though?
If you are worried about whether your child is sleeping enough or sleeping too much, talk to your doctor about it the next time you go in. In the meantime, here’s some knowledge to help you ward off any worries. If they are falling asleep when they shouldn’t be, forcing you to drag them out of bed in the morning, or sleeping all day on the weekends to catch up on their sleep debt, they are not getting enough sleep.
