7 Tips to Help Your Child Develop Reading and Writing Skills

Now, perhaps more than ever, parents play an active role in the academic development of their children. The onus of child-rearing and writing lies on the parent especially during this Covid 19 pandemic era.

This is quite tricky and tasking as parents themselves have to juggle all this with working from home. Schools are shut and as such, parents have to fill in for their children’s teachers, get assignment help online or use paper writing service with essay writers for their kids and so on.

Don’t get us wrong, we don’t mean parents didn’t play any part at all before the pandemic. After all, parents are the first persons to begin talking to their children and that is the true beginning to reading and writing.

It is where the child begins to learn language sounds. Your words to your child impact heavily on your child’s prowess in communication, reading, writing, listening and comprehension. 

With Covid 19, you have to do more than just talk to your child. You have to actively help them translate the words spoken to them to reading and writing. In fact, you as a parent could make reading and writing enjoyable to your child than your child’s teacher ever could.

You can give the child, the creative freedom alongside learning their teacher could not afford to give. You could give your child custom papers or even college paper research that would make writing intriguing to them. 

7 Tips to Help Your Child Develop Reading and Writing Skills

These tips would help you to help your child develop your reading and writing skills in no time. Your child would even find these activities enjoyable and fun as opposed to your child thinking learn is drab and question why they are doing it. 

1. Teach them How Books and Print Work. 

Make reading and writing a parent-child activity for your child. Spend time with them when doing this and your bond would even grow stronger. Read books, comics, magazines or any other written materials with your child.

Trace words with your finger when you read to them, identify pictures and differentiate then from written words. Also, read each line repeatedly to let your child begin to have feel for certain words, show them where to read from and talk about the book generally. 

This would help them appreciate books and attach their memories of reading and writing with the positive feelings of hanging out with their parents. 

2. Do it Often

You can’t afford to do this occasionally. You have to find time with your child to help them improve their reading and writing skill. Spare time every day to make sure you and your child engage in reading and writing.

You might have to be creative about this so that it would fit around your schedule. It could be reading and writing out a grocery list with your child, reading aloud your own written words and get a fancy book for your child to write in. 

Also, let your child know you are always there to help out. You can help your child checking out their writing and also listen to them read. 

3. Include Fun Elements

Insert fun into your reading and writing activities. You could gamify it by giving your child points for each spelling they get right or each word they read correctly. Then reward them for their efforts with something they like. You could also play a word treasure with them and ask them to look for certain words. 

Also, let your child write letters and pair them with other kids who would be their pen-pals. If you can’t find pen-pals for your child, be their pen-pal and write letters to each other. You could make this even more fun by giving your child colourful writing materials.  

4. Set up a Reading and Writing Corner.

Have a special reading and writing corner in the house that would allow your child to practice their reading and writing without interference. 

5. Make The World their Writing Place 

In as much as you want to set up a cosy writing corner for your child, make the world their writing place by providing them with alternative writing materials, such as chalk, marker, paints and so on. Granted, your house will be messy but your child would improve their writing. 

Also, you could get a fun pouch for your child that would contain a sparkling journal which they can use to chronicle their own activities or what they have experienced during the day. At the end of the day, you could ask them to read their experience out for you. 

6. Read Stories to Your Child and Ask Them to Write Thiers. 

This will be exciting for them to do. It is an interesting way of keeping their interest in reading and writing alive. Read a story from their favourite book and ask them to write their own story. Have them read their story to you and applaud them when they are done. 

7. Go Digital

The world is a digital city. Incorporate digital elements into your teaching. Open up a blog for your child and have them write out what they feel like on it.
